Until 1971, the Indian Rupee was used in Bangladesh.
In 1972, the Taka became the official currency of Bangladesh.
The Taka was introduced in the newly-born Bangladesh (former East Pakistan province) when it gained its independence from Pakistan in 1971. The coins and banknotes denominated in Takas are issued in the Bangladesh Bank. Currently, there are coins of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 poishas and 1, 2, and 5 takas in circulation.
